WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP - PAINTING WITH TOM HAVERFIELD

Award winning artist Tom Haverfield will teach a one day watercolor workshop at the Life Enrichment Center on Saturday, March 10, 2012.

Mr. Haverfield’s step-by-step quick and easy method of painting will benefit both beginners and seasoned artists, who will complete a painting during this workshop. Bring your watercolors – Tom prefers Prang, paper (1/2 sheet of any size), small, medium and large brushes and a sense of adventure!

The Life Enrichment Center is registering now for its Low Impact Exercise class. This class incorporates moderate levels of cardiovascular conditioning, balance, flexibility and strengthening segments. Under the direction of Lynn Donofrio, a certified aerobic instructor and personal trainer, participants will be coached through a 60 minute total fitness experience. Open to participants at all levels, students can work at their own pace.

This class meets twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. The next class will begin on March 1, 2012. Students must pre-register prior to the first of the month. A NEW ART COURSE FOR ADULTS – SUMI-E ASIAN BRUSH PAINTING

The Life Enrichment Center is registering now for a new class for adults. Sumi-e Asian Brush Painting is a 6-week course that will run on Thursday from February 23rd through March 29, 2012 from 1:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m. The course fee is $75 for members of the Life Enrichment Center or $90 for non-members. Annual membership to the Life Enrichment Center starts at $30.
This class is for beginners or those who have already experienced the Chinese/Japanese style of painting. Students will complete one painting each week. Artists who paint in other styles have found it helpful to learn the strokes and brush control in Sumi-e painting. Learn how a few simple strokes can turn into a bird, flower, leaf, or bamboo.
The course will be taught by Susan McKay. Ms. McKay studied art at Columbus College of Art and Design and spent 25 years as a commercial designer, writer and illustrator. She has been teaching art classes for more than 30 years.

Studies will include still life set-ups, landscape, 3-D models, and photo references to learn and practice line and shading techniques, color and 3-D perspective working from Drawing into Painting. PLATT TRAVELING ART SHOW ON EXHIBIT AT THE UPPER TAMPA BAY LIBRARY

The Life Enrichment Center continues its Jan Platt Traveling Art Show, currently on exhibit at the Upper Tampa Bay Library at 11211 Countryway in Westchase. This show includes 18 paintings of various media and will be on display through April 30, 2012.
This traveling art exhibition features art work by members of the Life Enrichment Center and is named in honor of the Center’s Board member and long-time Hillsborough County Commissioner, Jan Kaminis Platt. Ms. Platt is well known for her support for the arts.

The Jan Platt Traveling Art Show will travel to various locations throughout the year, including the Hillsborough County Libraries and other venues. Paintings in the show are available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds of sales benefits the Life Enrichment Center, a private, non-profit organization.

The adult artists who attend classes at the Life Enrichment Center range in age from their 50s to their 90s. The center offers a creative outlet to adults who may never have had the time or the opportunity to explore their talents. More than 40 academic, creative and health and wellness classes are offered at the Center throughout the year. Satellite classes are held at Aston Garden Tampa Bay and MOSI.

A NEW WEIGHT LOSS AND HEALTH PROGRAM FOR ADULTS, G.I.F.T. – Get Into Fitness Today

Life Enrichment Center is registering now for its Creative Writing class. The class meets every Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon.

The class will encourage the creative side of students, whether you are writing fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or short stories. Writers will also learn about editing and publishing your work. This class is open to all levels, from aspiring writers to published authors.

The class will be taught by Ezra Ochshorn. A former copy editor at the University of South Florida, Ezra has been an avid writer since the age of 16. His professional credits include:

• Articles on elder health issues published in the Christian Science Monitor and other newspapers
• A play produced by the University of Maine

“Joy of Painting” is a six-week class designed to teach adult students how to handle the painting process using either watercolors or acrylics. THE PAGES OF MY LIFE—WRITING YOUR LIFE STORY

Each of us is a living legacy of memories, experiences, and history. By writing down our stories we create more than a family legacy—we discover certain themes in our lives and develop greater wisdom about ourselves. The Life Enrichment Center’s Pages of My Life—Writing Your Life Story class will help individuals collect and compile their life stories.
Pages of My Life is taught by author and editor Paula Stahel, who is immediate past president of the Association of Personal Historians Inc. With her help, you will learn to tap into your natural talent for preserving your stories.
“You get excited about the prospect of writing, even your own story that you thought no one would want to hear,” says Sally Baker, who had a story published in The Tampa Tribune after taking the class. “Paula’s class was one of the best experiences I’ve had while learning. STARTING IN JANUARY – PAINTING ANIMALS IN ACRYLICS

Life Enrichment Center is registering now for a new 6-week class for animal lovers. If you want to paint pet portraits, then this class is for you! The instructor, Brigitte Mailahn, will get you started, with all of the steps necessary, in a paint along of a little dog, taking students from a two-dimensional photo to a finished three-dimensional painting in acrylics. Beginning or experienced artists are welcome.

Participants will learn how to improve their health by incorporating good nutrition and physical activity into their lifestyles. LOW IMPACT EXERCISE CLASS FOR ADULTS

The Life Enrichment Center is registering now for its Low Impact Exercise class. This class incorporates moderate levels of cardiovascular conditioning, balance, flexibility and strengthening segments. Under the direction of Lynn Donofrio, a certified aerobic instructor and personal trainer, participants will be coached through a 60 minute total fitness experience. Open to participants at all levels, students can work at their own pace.

This class meets twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. The next class will begin on January 3, 2012. Students must pre-register prior to the first of the month. TAI CHI CLASSES FOR ADULTS AT MOSI

The Life Enrichment Center is registering adults for its new session of Tai Chi classes.

Join us for a moving meditation in Yang style Tai Chi for health. The 6-week class will meet Monday evenings, from January 9th through February 13, 2012. Classes will be held at MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry), 4801 E. Fowler Avenue, Tampa.

Beginning Tai Chi will meet from 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.
Intermediate Tai Chi meets from 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.

Research has shown that Tai Chi improves strength, balance and stamina, helping to prevent falls; increases bone density; reduces blood pressure; helps fibromyalgia symptoms; and improves overall health and wellness. Students in this class will learn to move in an ergonomic and efficient manner consistent with physics and physiology.

FREE DANCE WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS

Forever Moving, Tampa Bay area’s first and only modern dance company for adults, is now accepting new members. The class meets weekly every Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and is open to adults of all ages, with or without dance experience. A special introductory workshop will be offered free on Friday, January 6, 2012.

Participants will enjoy creative exploration and modern dance instruction, with an introduction to choreographic tools and methods. Professional choreographer Cynthia Hennessy from Moving Current Dance Co. will lead the classes. A NEW ART COURSE FOR ADULTS – SUMI-E ASIAN BRUSH PAINTING

Sumi-e Asian Brush Painting is a 6-week course that will run on Thursday from January 12th through February 16, 2012 from 1:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m. The course fee is $75 for members of the Life Enrichment Center or $90 for non-members. This class is for beginners or those who have already experienced the Chinese/Japanese style of painting. Students will complete one painting each week. Artists who paint in other styles have found it helpful to learn the strokes and brush control in Sumi-e painting. Learn how a few simple strokes can turn into a bird, flower, leaf, or bamboo.
The course will be taught by Susan McKay. Ms. McKay studied art at Columbus College of Art and Design and spent 25 years as a commercial designer, writer and illustrator. She has been teaching art classes for more than 30 years.

STARTING IN JANUARY – PAINTING ANIMALS IN ACRYLICS

Life Enrichment Center is registering now for a new 6-week class for animal lovers. If you want to paint pet portraits, then this class is for you! The instructor, Brigitte Mailahn, will get you started, with all of the steps necessary, in a paint along of a little dog, taking students from a two-dimensional photo to a finished three-dimensional painting in acrylics. This workshop will give students a free form opportunity to think outside the box and explore different painting styles. James Vann graduated from the high school of Art & Design in New York City, majoring in animation and illustration. He also attended the Albert Pels School of Art in New York City. There, he studied commercial art and illustration. Shortly after he began his career as a Corrections Officer at the NYC Dept. of Corrections, his artistic talent was recognized by officials and he was promoted to the position of Art Director in the Public Affairs Division. In that capacity, he taught art classes to inmates in all of New York City Jails & on Rikers Island.
He has had many group & solo exhibitions throughout New York City and Tampa and has received commissions for designs and murals from the NYC Police & Fire Dept., NYC Dept. of Corrections, and the Hillsborough County Public Art Committee. He recently completed a commission project of six large murals at the Tampa Police Dept. District III headquarters in east Tampa. His work has been widely exhibited in numerous locations in the United States.
